Paris’ original bakery welcomes guests to learn the secrets of French baking

This year, Hotel du Petit Moulin, Paris is going back to its baking roots. Set in the heart of Le Marais in a 17th century building that was once Paris’ first bakery, Hotel du Petit Moulin will be welcoming guests for a deeply comfortable two night stay and a baking masterclass at La Cuisine Paris, just down the road from the hotel. ‘Baguettes & Boulangerie’ stays are from €280 per person.

Hotel du Petit Moulin’s baking credentials are impressive. This is where Victor Hugo would come to buy his baguette from his home on the nearby Place des Vosges, while the 1900 shop frontage – now listed by French Heritage – is still so convincing that many passers-by pop their heads around the door in search of a fresh croissant or two.

While there is no longer a bakery here, what awaits behind the door is a true couture hotel designed throughout by Christian Lacroix. Each of the 17 rooms – of all shapes and sizes in line with the 17th century quirks of the building – is individually designed, each telling a different story of Le Marais, Paris’ oldest quartier. Some rooms are bright and daring, others antiquated and more rustic; all are wonderfully theatrical and playful, and unquestionably the work of Lacroix.

Set on the banks of the Seine just a short stroll from Hotel du Petit Moulin, La Cuisine Paris is all about the delights of French food, encouraging its guests to learn, cook and eat. Guests will reap the rewards of a baguette or croissant making workshop, learning exactly what goes in to making some of France’s most famous baked goods – and, of course, creating plenty of baked treats to fuel the weekend. Over three hours, the history and secrets of the techniques will be revealed and guests will bake their own creations, as well as learning a recipe to replicate at home.
